Great Eats for Football Season

It’s September, and that means one thing for sports fans – football season is in full swing.  Whether you consider your home team the Ravens or the Redskins, or you root for your favorite college teams, gathering with friends to watch The Game is a ritual for football fans.  And Baltimore and DC are full of passionate fans!


When gathering to watch the game, the food is often predictable – bags of pretzels, chips and salsa, sometimes burgers and dogs.  But if you’re having the gang over to your house, you can feed them great food with very little extra effort than it takes you to dump that bag of chips into a bowl.

Chili:  A great way to warm your belly on a cool autumn day, chili is a smart choice to serve a crowd.  You can make meatless chili with different types of beans, including kidney, black, and navy beans.  Or serve the carnivores at your party chili made with ground beef or sausage.  Keep a big pot of chili on the stove on warm, and have toppings lined up for your guests to add – shredded cheese, chopped onions, black olives, sour cream.  Corn bread is a nice side addition with chili.

Baked Potato Bar:  This is another easy dish to prepare ahead of time.  Wrap individual potatoes in foil and bake in the oven.  You can keep them warm for serving by placing the wrapped potatoes in a crock pot set to warm.  Your toppings can be the traditional crumbled bacon, cheese, and sour cream.  Or your topping choices can revolve around a theme, such as Mexican with taco-spiced ground beef, shredded pepper jack cheese, salsa, and sliced jalapenos.

Signature Dish:  If you want to get a little more creative, why not serve food that the opposing team’s city is famous for?  If you’re playing the Eagles, serve Philly cheese steaks.  The Giants?  Serve New York-style pizza.  When your team is playing New Orleans, think seafood gumbo, shrimp creole, or po-boys.  Use your imagination and have fun with the menu.
