  • Options for Replacement Siding Materials

    6/9/2011 5:00 AM

When researching siding options for your home, you can become overwhelmed by the choices. Popular options include stone veneer, fiber cement, engineered wood siding, and vinyl siding. There are pros and cons for each option and should be weighed in order for you to know what option best suits you. While stone veneer is extremely durable, it will easily have you spending $11-$15 a square foot. Fiber cement siding is relatively inexpensive but usually does not come with an extended warranty. Not having a lifetime guarantee can put a strain on your wallet in the years to come. Engineered wood siding, or composite wood, is composed of wood products and other materials. Like wood board siding, it will require maintenance and take time away from other activities. Vinyl siding comes in many forms and is virtually maintenance free. If not properly installed, vinyl siding can cause mold and mildew but here at Thompson Creek, we take the extra step to ensure this does not happen. We wrap your home and then place a lining of material that allows the wall to breathe and prevent moisture build up Thompson Creek Window Company offers a vinyl siding that is backed by our lifetime guarantee. If you are in the market for vinyl siding, Thompson Creek siding is the way to go!

  • Testing Windows for Rain and Wind Load

    5/24/2011 12:00 AM

Ever wonder how your windows are tested to compute the maximum rainfall and wind load they can withstand? At Thompson Creek Window Company, we put our double hung, slider, casement and fixed replacement windows through vigorous testing to figure out exactly what extreme weather conditions they can handle. Testing the amount rainfall a window can endure in an hour consists of spraying a continuous stream of pressurized water on the window until failure is achieved. Thompson Creek’s double hung windows can withstand over 11 of rain per hour. The highest rainfall recorded in the Baltimore area was 6.39 in one day. With the rainy season still very active, Thompson Creek windows will keep you and the inside of your house dry with windows that won’t leak. The amount of wind pressure that a window can handle is measured in a similar way. Wind is blown toward a window until the breaking point is met. Thompson Creek windows average a wind load of 153 mph which is comparable to a strong Category Four hurricane. Figuring out what window suits your needs can be difficult but Thompson Creek assists you every step of the way. Knowing your home is protected by windows that can withstand extreme wind and rain conditions gives you that peace of mind. And Thompson Creek backs up that promise with our double-lifetime warranty and guarantee of 100% customer satisfaction.

  • NAHB Study: Insulated Vinyl Siding

    5/20/2011 12:00 AM

What is protecting the exterior of your home? Is it energy efficient? A recent study completed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center shows that 44% of homeowners prefer insulated vinyl siding as their exterior siding material of choice over traditional vinyl, brick, aluminum, fiber cement, and more. The participants were asked If you were to replace the exterior siding on your current home today, which type would you prefer to replace it with? The top choice among homeowners was insulating vinyl siding with 44%, followed by vinyl siding at 25.2%, brick or stone at 8.5%, and aluminum or steel at 6.9%. Other choices included fiber cement, wood, and stucco. Over 1,500 homeowners across the United States completed the online survey in February. To qualify for the study, each respondent had to own a single family home, townhome or duplex built in 1995 of earlier that was sided with something other than brick, stone or stucco. These requirements ensured that they may be candidates for new siding now or in the future. By replacing your old siding, you can take advantage of the latest developments in siding. Vinyl siding from companies like Thompson Creek Window Company lays flat, hides any imperfections in the underlayment, has fewer seams and is foam laminated to add extra insulation to your home and block noise. Thompson Creek siding is also thicker and 300% more impact-resistant, providing your home with lifetime protection from ice, hail, winds up to 165 mph and other damaging weather conditions. And with vinyl siding, you never have to climb a ladder again to paint your house.

  • Gutter Screens and Springtime - a Bad Combination

    4/20/2011 12:00 AM

Spring is in full bloom and the mid-Atlantic, as evidenced by the yellow film on our cars and the trees dropping all sorts of blooms. How are your gutters doing this spring? If you have gutter screens, they're probably not operating at peak performance.   Once the tree buds, seeds and spring storm debris pile up on your roof and those gutter screens clog, the gutters are unable to effectively carry rainwater off your roof and away from your home. But cleaning your gutters and downspouts is a thankless chore, not to mention a dangerous one. For most homeowners it’s a necessity. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up, ultimately damaging your siding and fascia. Clogged or overflowing gutters can harm your landscaping and cause erosion. Water can eventually seep down along your foundation, even finding its way into your basement. The best solution is one like the Thompson Creek Gutter System, which completely encloses and protects your gutters. There are no vertical openings for leaves and debris to enter and no screens to clog. Rainwater flows over and around the nose of the gutter system, into your gutters and swiftly though your downspouts. Our gutters offer protection against the elements with our exclusive high back system with eight flow reducers, preventing unwanted overflow and completely protecting the fascia.
